For many years I’ve watched Larry King (CNN) because he is a great interviewer in that he lets the ‘other guy’ speak... and he listens. Now, I am not always thrilled by those he chooses to talk to and often, after checking, go to some other source of entertainment, but I always check.
Larry King is soon to be a ‘celeb’ of the past as he is leaving his spot on TV. This week he has booked an eclectic group of interviews for his final hours which so far has been interesting - that is until tonight!
It is one thing to interview politicians and personalities... and that is good box office. But when one gets into the area of international politics and, of all people, the president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad... my God! King has guts! Ahmadinejad may look crummy and need a shave, but he is one smart cookie and was an academic before he entered Iranian politics.
Unfortunately he turned the tables and asked King leading questions about our American civil atrocities which even appeared worse than what we normally think of Iran! The interview was a disaster!
I suspect that Hillary would have been better able to handle Ahmadinejad, but certainly not Larry King! We should bear that in mind when we consider who is going to debate whom in the future! We do have some defenses, but King really was a fish out of water. It is obvious that a good interviewer is not necessarily a good debater!
King was not up to the challenge not only because he lacks the intellect of the President of Iran but he was also handicapped because he is Jewish. Normally he hides his religion or jokes about it, but in this case he became overly defensive of his religious beliefs and the Zionists of Israel who have always been hard for anyone to defend... I mean, the holocaust was a long time ago for most of us (not me, however) and did not happen in Palestine or present time Israel, but by a Catholic (Hitler was a staunch Catholic). Nor did it happen in the Middle East, but rather in northern Europe!
