Homemade incubator saves Kenyan infant lives
An incubator designed by a traditional birth attendant and herbalist in a slum in Nairobi, Kenya, has been saving the lives of infants for some 20 years. Squatter slums around Baghdad subsist on garbage economy
In the Iraqi capital, men are turning to nocturnal scavenging in light of the flagging economy. They are collecting and selling cans, scrap metal and garbage to support their families. "People here are living on garbage and animals," said a middleman in the midsize Naser City, a squatter settlement that subsists largely on the underground refuse economy.
